02/13/2010 - Oldsmar, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Highly regarded three-year-old Rule accelerated down the stretch to win Saturday's $225,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. The 1 1/16 mile race is the final local prep for the Tampa Bay Derby on Saturday, March 13.
Ridden by John Velazquez, Rule took the lead shortly after the start and set the pace while being pressed by Schoolyard Dreams and Middle of the Nite. Rule was sent off as the even-money favorite in the six horse field.
While the favorite was on the front end, 3-2 second choice Uptowncharlybrown loped along in last. As the field entered the far turn Rule still had the lead with Schoolyard Dreams and Middle of the Nite to his outside.
Coming off the turn for home it was Rule and Schoolyard Dreams together in front as Uptowncharlybrown began to rally. With about a furlong to run Rule broke away from Schoolyard Dreams and proceeded to open up down the stretch.
Owned by WinStar Farm, Rule hit the wire three-lengths ahead of second-place finisher Schoolyard Dreams and jockey Cornelio Velasquez. Uptowncharlybrown, ridden by Daniel Centeno, advanced to third followed by Silver Craft, Middle of the Nite and Tristen's Mambo.
The time for the Sam F. Davis stakes was 1:44.15 on a fast track.

Rule returned $4.00, $2.80 and $2.20. Schoolyard Dreams paid $5.80 and $3.20, and Uptowncharlybrown paid $2.40 to show,
Trained by Todd Pletcher, Rule picked up $120,000 with the victory to bring his earnings to $716,700. The winner of four of six career starts, the colt made most of his bankroll by winning the $750,000 Delta Jackpot in December at Delta Downs.
Last year the Davis Stakes was won by General Quarters who went on to capture the Blue Grass Stakes.
